Losing weight is widely accepted to be based on the amount of calories consumed.
If someone wants to lose weight, they must take in less calories than they expend - although the quality of the calories can make a difference, this is the basic method for weight loss.
But the amount of calories each individual should consume varies - so how does the would-be dieter work it out easily?
The NHS advises men have a daily calorie allowance of 1,900kcal and women 1,400kcal.
However, this will differ widely depending on a number of factors, such as height, current weight and even age.
There are many calculators online that will tell you, but if you want to work it out yourself, there is a formula you can use.
Simply multiply your current weight in pounds by 4.5 (A). Then multiply your height in inches by 15.88 (B). Multiply your age by five (C).
