Health industry research shows modern males are so scared of working out that many New Year resolutions quickly collapse.
Exercise-shy blokes find going to the gym only slightly less nerve-racking than giving a presentation at work or sleeping with a partner for the first time, a poll shows.
Of 2,000 men questioned in a consumer survey, 16 per cent said going to a gym for the first time was their most daunting experience.
Having to do a work presentation was dreaded by 22 per cent and sex with a new partner by 18 per cent.
Lesser worries included going on a first date (12 per cent) and turning up at a party alone (10 per cent).
The findings came in a survey for fitness equipment suppliers Opti, Argos and bodybuilding firm LDN Muscle.
A poll spokesman said: “It appears that ‘gym-timidation’ is affecting many of our resolution-making males.
“In fact, the average man would rather go on a first date or go to a party on his own.”
